Figured Veneer has a distinct surface effect of grain and color patterns caused by the natural patterns of growth or due to biological defects in the tree. In general, not all species produce figured wood, the look and feel effect may vary from log to log. A strong and consistent figure leads to a higher price. The surface touch is smooth although the wavy texture across the face of wood veneer looks like an uneven surface.

The look effect in figure veneer is due to the reflection of light on the uneven arrangements on the veneer’s fibers.

The various forms in figured veneer include

Bee’s wing, curly, mottle, pommele, quilted, ripple, ribbon, etc.

How Figured Veneer is produced?

The typical type of veneer is produced by conspicuous early/late wood contrast of the annual rings. It is done with a tangential cut to their conical tapering towards the top of the log.

Wood species like Robinia, walnut, ash, oak or elm have a crown figure. Wood species with the wavy figures are oak and plane.
